[Guide] The Paint Pail, Roller Pan and Roller Grid

2009-05-14

You have a paint roller and extension handle, now you need something to put the paint into. Many homeowners choose the trusty paint pan. But the pro’s use a different set-up, a 5 gallon bucket and roller grid. This type of paint roller set-up has many advantages over the paint pan.

•  Stability - You won’t step into a 5 gallon paint bucket or kick it over.
•   Holds More Paint - As much as 2 gallons at a time. This will keep you rolling longer.
•   Easier Filling – Fewer spills, less mess.
•   Speeds Up the Painting – Dipping and racking is faster and less time between refills. Plus, the roller nap will be filled more completely. All you need is a plastic 5 gallon bucket and a 9 inch paint roller grid.

The Roller Grid

Without this part the entire system won’t work. This is amazing for something so simple and inexpensive. A paint roller grid is simply the part that the roller nap is racked against to remove excess paint. Most are made from expanded metal lath with a fixed bend frame designed to hang inside the bucket.

Paint roller grids are available for 1 gallon cans, 2 gallon pails and 5 gallon buckets. Sizes are 4, 6 and 9 inch wide.

Specialty Paint Buckets

In order to use wide commercial paint roller frames you will have to use a specially designed roller bucket. These are rectangular buckets that have the roller grid built in. These must be used with the 12-18 commercial frames.

An alternative to the traditional round 5 gallon bucket is a square specialty paint bucket for 7-9 inch rollers. It comes with a lid and has the roller grid built in.

Cut-In Paint Bucket

This is a neat category of paint buckets. There are several types on the market. All do more than hold some paint. They also suspend the brush in the paint, no more bent bristles. Options include a belt attachment for wrapping around your waste and freeing your hands.
